Candidate at the right Marine Extreme French presidential Le Pen warned Wednesday against sending more weapons in Ukraine and called for a rapprochement between NATO and Russia after the war winds down Moscow in Ukraine.

Le Pen, a nationalist outspoken who maintains longstanding ties with Russia, also confirmed that if overthrew President Emmanuel Macron in the second round presidential April 24 in France, she would withdraw France from the military command NATO and remind the french support for the entire European Union.

Macron, a centrist pro-EU, is facing a harder fight than expected to stay in power, partly because the economic impact of the war hits hardest the poorest households. The European partners of France fear that any presidency Le Pen will undermine Western unity while the United States and Europe seek to support Ukraine and to end the ruinous war of Russia against his neighbor .

Asked about military aid to Ukraine, Le Pen said she would continue her support for defense and intelligence.

“(But) I’m booked on direct arms deliveries. Why? Because … the fine line between using and become a co-belligerent, “the leader of the extreme right, citing concerns about an” escalation of this conflict which could bring a whole number of countries in a military engagement. “

Earlier Wednesday, the spokesman of the French Government, Gabriel Attal, said France had sent to 100 million euros ($ 109 million) of weapons to Ukraine in recent weeks as part of a flow of Western weapons.

Earlier in his term, Macro had tried to reach out to Russian President Vladimir Putin to improve Russia’s relations with the West, and Macron met Putin weeks before the Russian invasion in an effort to prevent vain. However, since then, France has supported EU sanctions against Moscow and offered continued support to Ukraine.

Le Pen also said that France should take a more independent way of the NATO military alliance led by the United States.

And despite the atrocities committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, Le Pen said NATO should seek a “strategic rapprochement” with Russia once the war is over. Such a relationship would be “in the interests of France and Europe and I think even the United States”, she said, to prevent Russia from forging a stronger alliance with world power China. .

She did not directly address the horrors unfolding in Ukraine.

Le Pen spoke at a press conference Wednesday to outline his foreign policy plans, which include assistance to African countries unless they stop migrants bring “undesirable” seeking to enter France. She also wants to reduce its support for international efforts to improve the reproductive health of women in poor countries, increasing the rights of minorities or solve environmental problems.

At the end of the event, protesters held up a poster showing a 2017 meeting between Le Pen and Putin. One activist was expelled from the room. Anti-racism protesters also staged a small demonstration outside.

“The election of Ms. Le Pen would mean the election of an admirer of the Putin regime, autocratic rule and an admirer of the logic of imperialist Putin,” said Dominique Sopo, head of SOS Racism group. “It would mean that France would become a vassal of Putin’s Russia.”
