Adrien Rabiot’s impending move to Manchester United has become one of the transfer stories of the summer, but it’s not the first time the 27-year-old midfielder has been coveted in the city.

After impressing as a youth for French side Créteil, 13-year-old Rabiot was noticed by scouts and invited to join Manchester City’s youth roster in 2008.

Traveling to the United Kingdom alongside his mother and his agent, Véronique Rabiot, the teenager joined the Manchester City Academy, then under the leadership of Jim Cassell.

However, after spending just six months with the club and amidst homesickness, Rabiot ultimately opted to leave Manchester to return to his native France.

Speaking about his experience later, Rabiot would offer insight into what went wrong during his time at the club.

“Everything was fine, but after six months the club broke some agreements, so my mum said ‘Stop’ and we went home,” he said in 2020.

The French international finally left Manchester following a disagreement between the club and his mother and agent, Véronique Rabiot.

The disagreements between the elder Rabiot and Manchester City are believed to have been over Veronique wanting assurances from the club for her son who allegedly breached FIFA regulations on foreign players.

After his return to France, Rabiot would turn to other local clubs before joining PSG’s youth squad in 2010, eventually joining the Parisian club’s first team.

After a nine-year stint in the French capital, Rabiot will join Juventus in 2019 under Maurizio Sarri’s short reign at the club.
